Going back and forth in a field full of rocks

Jules picks a rock in the soft spring soil
We put 'em all in the bucket or in the trailer in the back
Later we'll go eat some onion soup and some bread crumbs
And go to sleep our backs aching, our smiles bright and dumb
Dog chases sticks we throw out in the ditch
Comes back with a frog swinging on his cheeks
The sun melts the glue on my steel-toe boots
So I stick them in the ground to keep them cool

And the day could never be any brighter
Any brighter, any hotter underneath the ozone layer
We must have walked more than twice the distance between here and home
And our soles are still warm the morning after

Clara and Jules start to fight over who's next to drive
The tractor has one seat but they could both easily fit
The weird staring neighbor comes over with his wife
A draft of wind pulls her hair to one side
The scar on her temple tells me she knows about life
And the face of her husband shows he has no clue
Like on Sainte-Catherine street with scrapers everywhere
Wind doesn't stop blowing until late in the afternoon

And the day could never be any brighter
Any softer, any nicer with a fresh dip in the water
We must have seen a hundred birds, a thousand bees, a million creatures
And our eyes are still shining the day after

Sweat makes a bed of pearls under my nose
I look at the river for a comforting image
The landscape is frozen just holding a pose
I smile and I click, in my head there's a camera
With a whole world of pictures of the people I meet
And the things that I see that make everything clear
Like the river, the sky, my uncle, the dog
